Luxury Backyard Tips You NEED!

By Your Great Outdoors – Houston’s Custom Outdoor Living Experts

Luxury living doesn’t stop at your back door. In Houston, where outdoor living is practically a lifestyle, a thoughtfully designed backyard can become the most valuable and enjoyable part of your home. From custom pools to elevated outdoor kitchens, luxury backyards are about blending comfort, beauty, and functionality into one seamless experience.

At Your Great Outdoors, we specialize in transforming ordinary backyards into luxury outdoor retreats. Whether you’re starting from scratch or upgrading an existing space, these luxury backyard tips will help you design an outdoor oasis that feels like a five-star resort—right at home.

1. Start With a Master Plan (Luxury Is Intentional)

The foundation of any luxury backyard is intentional design. High-end outdoor spaces don’t happen by accident—they’re carefully planned to ensure flow, balance, and purpose.

Before choosing finishes or features, consider:

  • How you’ll use the space (entertaining, relaxing, family time)

  • Sightlines from inside your home

  • Sun exposure and shade needs

  • Privacy and noise control

  • Future upgrades or phases

A professional backyard designer can help you visualize the entire space as one cohesive environment rather than a collection of separate features. This is where luxury truly begins.

2. Invest in a Custom Pool That Feels Like a Resort

A luxury backyard in Houston often centers around a custom-designed pool. Skip cookie-cutter designs and opt for features that elevate both aesthetics and experience.

Luxury pool upgrades to consider:

  • Geometric or modern pool designs

  • Tanning ledges with umbrella sleeves

  • Infinity edges or perimeter overflows

  • Glass tile or high-end plaster finishes

  • Built-in spas with spillovers

  • LED pool lighting for night ambiance

A well-designed pool doesn’t just cool you off—it becomes a visual centerpiece that defines the entire backyard.

3. Create Multiple Outdoor “Rooms.”

Luxury backyards function like an extension of your home. Instead of one large open area, divide your space into distinct outdoor rooms.

Examples include:

  • Pool lounge zone with chaises

  • Covered patio for dining

  • Outdoor kitchen and bar area

  • Fire pit seating space

  • Quiet retreat with daybeds or swings

Defined spaces make your backyard feel larger, more intentional, and far more luxurious.

4. Upgrade Your Outdoor Kitchen Beyond the Basics

A true luxury backyard deserves more than a basic grill. A fully equipped outdoor kitchen adds both convenience and serious wow factor.

Luxury outdoor kitchen features:

  • Built-in grills with searing stations

  • Pizza ovens or smokers

  • Quartz or natural stone countertops

  • Outdoor-rated refrigerators and ice makers

  • Bar seating with custom lighting

  • Weatherproof cabinetry

In Houston’s climate, covered outdoor kitchens allow year-round use while increasing your home’s value.

5. Prioritize Shade and Comfort

Luxury isn’t just about looks—it’s about comfort. In Texas heat, shade is non-negotiable.

High-end shade solutions include:

  • Extended covered patios

  • Custom pergolas with stained wood or metal

  • Motorized retractable shades

  • Louvered patio covers

  • Integrated ceiling fans and heaters

The right shade structure ensures your backyard is enjoyable no matter the season.

6. Elevate the Space With High-End Materials

Luxury backyards stand out because of their materials and finishes. Quality is visible—and it lasts.

Consider upgrading to:

  • Natural stone decking or porcelain pavers

  • Premium travertine or limestone

  • Custom concrete finishes

  • Stainless steel and masonry features

  • Glass tile, marble, or metallic accents

These materials not only elevate appearance but also perform better in Houston’s heat and humidity.

7. Elevate Comfort With Poolside Amenities

Think beyond the water:

  • Plush lounge chairs and outdoor sofas
  • A shaded cabana or daybed
  • An outdoor sound system
  • Beverage stations or a poolside bar

These details turn your pool area into a private resort.

8. Add Fire and Water Features for Drama

Nothing says luxury like the contrast of fire and water. These features instantly elevate the atmosphere of your backyard.

Popular luxury additions:

  • Linear fire pits

  • Fire bowls or water bowls

  • Sheer descents or scuppers

  • Bubblers on tanning ledges

  • Custom water walls

These elements add movement, sound, and visual interest that make your space feel truly custom.

9. Design for Privacy Without Sacrificing Style

Luxury backyards feel like private retreats. Privacy can be achieved beautifully without feeling closed off.

Stylish privacy solutions include:

  • Decorative privacy walls

  • Vertical wood or metal screens

  • Lush landscaping and hedges

  • Custom fencing with architectural detail

The goal is to create seclusion while maintaining openness and elegance.

10. Blend Landscaping With Architecture

Landscaping is the finishing touch that ties everything together. Luxury landscapes are intentional, layered, and low-maintenance.

Luxury landscaping tips:

  • Use a mix of textures and heights

  • Frame focal points like pools or fire features

  • Incorporate accent trees and planters

  • Choose plants suited for Houston’s climate

  • Integrate landscape lighting for depth

A well-designed landscape enhances both your backyard and your home’s architecture

3D design package of modern pool

A 3D Video Package is the Smartest Step for Your Dream Backyard

, , , , , , ,

Why Investing in a 3D Rendering Package is the Smartest First Step for Your Dream Backyard

Close your eyes and picture your dream backyard. Maybe you see a sparkling pool, a cozy outdoor kitchen, a shaded patio where you sip coffee in the mornings, or even a fire pit where your family gathers on chilly evenings.

The problem? It can be hard to imagine how all those elements come together in your actual space. Will that pool fit the way you want? Will your patio feel open or cramped? Will the outdoor kitchen block the flow to the yard—or make entertaining easier than ever?

That’s where a 3D rendering package comes in. At Your Great Outdoors, we use cutting-edge design software to take your ideas off the paper and bring them to life on the screen. Before you spend a single dollar on construction, you’ll be able to see exactly how your future backyard looks—and feels.

And trust us: once you’ve seen your backyard design in 3D, you’ll wonder how people ever planned without it.

By Your Great Outdoors – Houston’s Custom Outdoor Living Experts

When you picture a luxury pool, what comes to mind? Sparkling blue water, elegant design, comfortable lounging areas, and every detail perfectly placed. At Your Great Outdoors, we believe your pool should be more than a place to swim — it should be the centerpiece of your backyard, a personal retreat, and a lasting investment in your home.

Whether you’re building from scratch or upgrading your existing space, these 10 luxury pool tips will help you create a show-stopping outdoor experience that’s as functional as it is beautiful.

What Exactly Is a 3D Rendering Package?

A 3D rendering package is a digital design service that turns your wish list into a realistic, computer-generated model of your outdoor living project.

Instead of looking at flat blueprints or generic sketches, you’ll get:

  • A lifelike, virtual model of your future backyard

  • Multiple perspectives (from the patio, poolside, or even an aerial view)

  • Accurate scale and sizing so you know how every feature fits

  • Material and finish previews to compare looks (stone, tile, decking, etc.)

In short—it’s the difference between imagining your dream space and actually seeing it before it’s built.

1. Confidence in Your Decisions

Outdoor living projects in Houston and Katy are big investments. A pool, patio, and outdoor kitchen can easily become one of the largest upgrades you’ll ever make to your home.

Without a 3D rendering, you’re relying on your imagination—and maybe a Pinterest board—to make decisions about layout, materials, and finishes. That can feel overwhelming.

With a rendering package, you’ll have crystal-clear visuals. You’ll know exactly what your kitchen island will look like in stone versus stucco, how the pool shape flows with the patio, or whether that pergola creates just the right amount of shade.

That confidence not only makes decision-making easier but also prevents second-guessing later.

2. Spot Issues Before They Happen

Here’s a truth we’ve learned after building countless custom outdoor spaces across Katy, Fulshear, and West Houston: what looks great on paper doesn’t always work in real life.

Maybe the fire pit feels too close to the pool. Maybe the dining table you imagined won’t fit comfortably under the patio cover. Maybe the layout blocks a view you love.

A 3D rendering allows you to “test drive” your space virtually, so you can catch those issues early. Adjustments in the design stage are simple and stress-free. Adjustments after construction? That’s when things get expensive.

Check out more of our 3D Videos

3. Save Time and Money

Think of a 3D rendering as insurance for your investment. By finalizing the design upfront, you’ll avoid costly mid-project changes and delays.

  • No surprises when the project is complete.

  • No wasted money on materials you end up not liking.

  • A smoother build process since the entire plan is clear from the start.

Yes, a rendering package is an additional upfront cost—but it often saves homeowners thousands of dollars in “I wish we had done it differently” regrets.

4. Easier to Share Your Vision

Maybe you and your spouse have different priorities: you want the outdoor kitchen, while he’s focused on the pool. Or maybe you’re working with a homeowners association (HOA) that requires detailed plans before approval.

A 3D rendering gives everyone the same picture—literally. Instead of trying to explain your vision, you can show it. That makes conversations with family members, HOAs, and even neighbors so much easier.

5. Total Creative Freedom

One of the biggest joys of a rendering is the ability to “try on” different looks. Want to see how natural stone compares to modern pavers? Curious whether a rectangle pool or a freeform pool feels better in your space?

With a 3D package, you can explore multiple options before committing. It’s like test-driving your backyard design until it feels just right.

6. Peace of Mind Through the Whole Journey

Remodeling and construction can be stressful. But when you know exactly what you’re building, the process feels exciting instead of nerve-wracking.

Homeowners tell us all the time that seeing their 3D renderings made the entire journey feel smoother:

  • They could picture the end result, not just the mess of construction.

  • They had confidence when choosing finishes, colors, and layouts.

  • They felt calmer writing the checks, knowing their dream space was already “real” on screen.

Real-Life Example: A Katy Family’s Backyard

One of our recent clients in Katy came to us with a wish list: a pool with a tanning ledge, a covered patio, and an outdoor kitchen for entertaining. On paper, it looked fine—but in the 3D rendering, they realized the kitchen layout blocked the best view of the pool.

By making a simple shift in the design phase, we gave them a layout that worked beautifully. When the project was complete, they told us:

“The 3D rendering was the best decision we made. We caught things we never would have thought about, and now our backyard feels perfect.”

Why Houston & Katy Homeowners Love It

In our area, where outdoor living is a true extension of the home, the stakes are high. You’re not just building a patio or pool—you’re creating the space where your family will spend summers, celebrate milestones, and unwind after long days.

That’s why Houston and Katy homeowners love starting with a rendering package. It brings clarity, creativity, and peace of mind to one of the biggest home investments they’ll ever make.

At Your Great Outdoors, we know timing is everything. Whether you want to kick off a large backyard transformation or start with a simple fire pit, we’ll help you navigate Houston’s weather, permitting schedules, and building trends to make the most of your investment.

We offer full-service design and construction for:

  • Custom inground pools

  • Outdoor kitchens

  • Covered patios and pergolas

  • Fire pits and fireplaces

  • Turf installation, lighting, and more

Always remember, your timing might be perfect for your family’s needs! Whenever you think is best for your family, chances are that’s the BEST timing. Just remember to factor in Houston weather, and you’ll be ready to build your next outdoor living project!

10 Luxury Pool Tips to Elevate Your Backyard Oasis

10 Luxury Pools Tips You NEED!

1. Start With a Custom Design That Reflects Your Lifestyle

Luxury is never one-size-fits-all. The most stunning pools are designed specifically for how you plan to use them.

  • Love to entertain? Opt for spacious tanning ledges, integrated seating, and a swim-up bar.

  • Looking for relaxation? Consider a serene infinity edge and a connected spa.

  • Want year-round enjoyment? Incorporate heating and ambient lighting for evening dips.

A professional custom pool builder in Katy, TX can work with you to design a layout, shape, and features that fit your personality and property.

2. Choose High-End Materials for a Timeless Look

The finish and materials you select will set the tone for your pool’s style and longevity. Luxury pools often feature:

  • Glass or mosaic tile for shimmer and texture

  • Travertine or natural stone decking for elegance and durability

  • Pebble finishes for a high-end, resort-like feel

Premium materials not only look beautiful but also stand up better to Houston’s weather and heavy use.

3. Add a Tanning Ledge for Resort-Style Lounging

A tanning ledge (also known as a Baja shelf) gives you a shallow space to relax, sunbathe, or watch the kids play.
Add stylish in-water loungers, umbrellas, and bubblers for that vacation-at-home feeling.

4. Incorporate Water Features for Sound and Movement

Waterfalls, sheer descents, and scuppers don’t just look amazing — they create a soothing soundtrack for your backyard.
For a truly luxurious effect, combine multiple water features for visual drama and ambiance.

5. Layer Your Lighting for Day-to-Night Glamour

Lighting transforms your pool from day use to an evening showpiece. Consider:

  • LED color-changing lights for customizable moods
  • Underwater lighting for sparkle and safety
  • Landscape lighting to highlight surrounding plants and architecture

Smart lighting systems let you control it all from your phone.

6. Create a Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Flow

Luxury living means blurring the lines between your indoor and outdoor spaces. Large sliding doors, covered patios, and outdoor kitchens right next to your pool make entertaining effortless.
A covered pavilion or pergola provides shade and style, while keeping guests connected to the pool area.

7. Elevate Comfort With Poolside Amenities

Think beyond the water:

  • Plush lounge chairs and outdoor sofas
  • A shaded cabana or daybed
  • An outdoor sound system
  • Beverage stations or a poolside bar

These details turn your pool area into a private resort.

8. Go Big With an Infinity or Perimeter-Overflow Design

For the ultimate in visual luxury, consider an infinity edge pool that blends into the horizon or a perimeter-overflow style where water flows evenly over every side. Both options create a mirror-like surface and an upscale, modern aesthetic.

9. Don’t Forget a Spa or Hot Tub

Nothing says luxury like a spillover spa integrated into your pool design.
Perfect for relaxing muscles, entertaining guests, or enjoying a warm soak in cooler weather.

10. Work With a Professional Luxury Pool Builder

The best way to ensure your pool is beautiful, functional, and built to last is to partner with an experienced luxury pool builder in Katy, TX. A professional will:

  • Recommend the best materials for your style and climate

  • Manage permits and construction timelines

  • Design features that maximize your space

  • Ensure the highest quality craftsmanship

Affordable Luxury:

10 Items That Make Your Pool Feel High-End
(Without Breaking the Bank)

You’ve just built the pool — now it’s time to make it feel like your private resort… but pool toys can get expensive quickly!
You don’t need to spend thousands to create a luxe backyard experience. In fact, the right accessories and small upgrades can transform your pool into a high-end escape, all while sticking to a smart budget. Here are our top recommended items to add instant luxury to your custom inground pool!

1. In-Pool Lounge Chairs

Bring the resort feel home with tanning ledge loungers — perfect for soaking up the sun while staying cool. Brands like Ledge Lounger or Mainstay (Walmart) offer sleek, ergonomic designs under $400 per chair. Now this price might feel a little… Shocking. HOWEVER, these chairs will last you a lifetime and still look amazing over time. We have homeowners say they are worth every penny! We’ve personally used them and CAN’T recommend them enough, but don’t just take our word for it – their reviews speak for themself!

Chairs are pictured down below!

Local tip: These are perfect for tanning ledges we build in Katy-area pools. Look for UV-resistant, water-weighted models.

2. Floating Drink Caddies + Waterproof Coolers

Who needs a swim-up bar when you can float your favorite drinks right to you? This is great for families who love to host, but might not have the bar space yet. Plus who want’s a dirty kitchen, when pool time is meant for relaxation! These also aren’t just for adults – Kids LOVE them. Not having to get in and out of the pool to go inside and grab a drink, or your kids forgetting to drink water, allows parents to relax… and not have to wipe up water tracked in the house 40 million times!

Inflatable floating coolers, bar trays, and drink holders add a playful, high-end touch for under $50. Great for pool parties or lazy Saturdays.

🛒 Shop: Intex Mega Chill Floating Cooler

3. LED Floating Lights

Add ambiance for under $100.

Floating or submersible LED lights instantly give your pool a luxury glow at night. Go for color-changing, rechargeable models that are remote-controlled for extra ease.
🛒 Shop: Blufree LED Pool Lights
Pro Tip: Line your Katy backyard patio with solar-powered lanterns for a high-end feel without electrical work.

4. Oversized Shade Umbrellas

Beat the Texas heat in style.

Freestanding cantilever umbrellas (look for 9-11 foot span) add instant resort vibes. They’re perfect for shallow ledges or lounge areas without the expense of a pergola or cabana.

🛒 Shop: Purple Leaf 10ft Cantilever Umbrella

5. Woven Storage Baskets for Towels + Toys

Small detail, big difference.

Add beautiful, weather-resistant baskets near your pool area to store fresh towels, goggles, floaties, or sunscreen. It creates a spa-like experience and keeps clutter out of sight.

🛒 Shop: Keter Outdoor Storage Basket

6. Stylish Pool Floats (That Aren’t Kiddie-Themed)

Skip the neon inner tubes. Opt for sleek, neutral-colored floats — think white, beige, or muted tones — for a more elevated poolside look.
Look for brands like Funboy or Frontgate for Instagram-worthy styles. Now these might be a little more expensive than what you’re used to, however, with normal pool toys you’ll have to keep rebuying them because they are made so cheaply. FUNBOY is an excellent and affordable pool product we know you’ll love!

🛒 Shop: FUNBOY Luxury Pool Lounger

7. Waterproof Bluetooth Speakers

Luxury is also about sound. A compact, portable Bluetooth speaker lets you play music poolside without permanent installation costs. If you do enjoy hosting, we wouldn’t recommend this as a permanent solution, but as a solution until you can install a sound system later on. Most companies might offer you a deal on installation during your pool build, but we wouldn’t count on it!

Choose waterproof models that float or mount to fences.

🛒 Shop: JBL Clip 4 Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker

 8. Pool Side Rugs

A good outdoor rug instantly upgrades your pool lounge area. It defines space, adds color, and feels amazing under bare feet. Best of all, it’s an affordable way to pull your whole backyard design together without a full patio renovation.

Look for:

  • UV-resistant, quick-dry materials

  • Patterns in beige, charcoal, or blue for a coastal-luxe vibe

  • 5×7 or 8×10 sizes under $150

🛒 Shop: Ruggable Outdoor Rugs (Bonus: machine washable!)

9. Floating Food tray

If you’ve ever been to a high-end resort, you’ve probably seen a floating breakfast tray or drink caddy gliding across the water. Now you can bring that same Instagrammable moment to your own pool — for under $100.

Why It Feels Luxe:

  • Perfect for wine, charcuterie, fruit, or sparkling water

  • Creates a “vacation at home” vibe

  • Ideal for girls’ nights, date nights, or pool parties

🛒 Shop:

✨ Luxury is in the Details

Adding just 2–3 of these items can instantly change the way your backyard feels — and none of them require construction, remodeling, or a huge budget.

At Your Great Outdoors, we specialize in helping Katy and Houston-area families upgrade their outdoor living spaces with smart design and stylish features — whether it’s building from scratch or adding a few final touches.

Is your family begging for a pool? Here’s our recommendation down below!

Living in Houston means long, hot summers and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors — and a geometric pool is the ideal way to make the most of it. With its clean lines and modern design, a geometric pool complements Houston’s contemporary home styles and maximizes backyard space, even in tight urban lots. Plus, it pairs perfectly with outdoor kitchens, covered patios, and the low-maintenance landscaping so many Houston homeowners love. It’s not just a pool — it’s a year-round lifestyle upgrade.

Geometric Pools – Katy Texas

Geometric Pools Are the Ultimate Modern Backyard Upgrade

When it comes to creating a sophisticated, stylish, and functional outdoor living space, few elements make a bigger impact than a custom swimming pool. And in 2025, geometric pools are leading the way for homeowners looking to blend clean aesthetics with ultimate comfort and usability.

At Your Great Outdoors, we specialize in designing and building luxury geometric pools in Katy, TX, that elevate the entire backyard experience. Whether you’re hosting summer pool parties or seeking a sleek, tranquil retreat, geometric designs offer both elegance and purpose.

In this blog, we’ll break down what makes geometric pools so appealing, explore the benefits, and help you decide if this style is right for your home. And if you’re looking for a custom pool builder in Katy TX, you’ll find out exactly why Your Great Outdoors is the name to trust.

What is a Geometric Pool?

Geometric pools are characterized by straight lines, sharp angles, and defined shapes — usually rectangles, squares, or even more complex linear forms like L-shapes and T-shapes. Unlike freeform pools that mimic the curves of a natural lagoon, geometric pools offer a structured, architectural feel that complements modern homes and clean landscaping designs.

These pools often pair perfectly with features like:

  • Infinity edges or zero-edge designs

  • Built-in tanning ledges

  • LED lighting and underwater benches

  • Integrated spas or linear fountains

  • Custom tile work and modern decking

This modern aesthetic is ideal for homeowners who want a timeless, high-end look that still delivers on functionality and relaxation.

Why Geometric Pools Are Trending in Katy, TX

Homeowners in Katy, TX are increasingly drawn to geometric pools for their clean lines, easy maintenance, and versatile design options. As a leading pool builder in Katy, we’ve seen a surge in demand for modern pool layouts that work seamlessly with outdoor kitchens, pergolas, and fire features.

Some key reasons why geometric pools are trending in the Katy area:

  • They complement modern and transitional home styles.
New homes in Katy are being built with sleek architecture, and geometric pools enhance that visual flow.

  • They maximize usable space.
Straight edges allow for more efficient layouts, especially in smaller backyards, making room for tanning ledges, patios, and outdoor living areas.

  • They’re great for entertaining.
Whether it’s a cocktail party or a family swim, the structured shape makes it easier to create zones for different types of use.

  • They work beautifully with custom features.
Water walls, fire bowls, and built-in spas all integrate naturally into geometric layouts.

Key Benefits of Geometric Pools

Still not sure if a geometric pool is right for you? Here are the standout benefits:

1. Clean, Elegant Aesthetic

Geometric pools offer a refined look that pairs effortlessly with both traditional and contemporary landscaping. They bring structure to the yard and often feel more upscale than freeform designs.

2. Better Use of Space

Their symmetrical layout makes it easier to fit into tight or narrow yards while still leaving space for surrounding hardscapes or outdoor kitchens.

3. Customization Options

Geometric doesn’t mean boring — quite the opposite. You can design the pool to fit your specific lifestyle, whether that includes a lap lane, shallow sun shelf, or modern waterfall feature.

4. Easier to Maintain

The straight sides and angles make cleaning and installing automatic pool covers much easier compared to curved designs.

5. Perfect for Modern Outdoor Living Spaces

If you’re building a backyard that includes modern patios, structured gardens, or outdoor entertaining spaces, a geometric pool will tie everything together.

What to Consider When Building a Geometric Pool

When choosing a custom pool builder in Katy, TX, it’s important to work with a team that understands how to balance beauty, function, and quality. Here’s what to think about as you plan:

Shape and Layout

Are you working with a long, narrow yard? A rectangular lap-style pool may be ideal. Want space for lounging and a built-in spa? Consider an L-shape or T-shape designed with a tanning ledge (also known as a sun-shelf). If you still don’t know if you should add a tanning ledge to your backyard, we’ve got a blog that can totally help with that! Click HERE

Materials

Modern pools often use premium materials like glass tile, porcelain decking, or light-colored plaster for a luxurious feel. However, we work with multiple brands that can ensure you get the right combination of luxury and price you’re looking for!

Features

Tanning ledges, floating steps, linear fire features, and hidden spas can all enhance a geometric pool without compromising the clean lines.

Landscaping

Complement your modern pool with architectural plants, turf and pavers, or even a sleek privacy wall for an elevated aesthetic.

Why your family needs a Geometric pool

Living in Houston means long, hot summers and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors — and a geometric pool is the ideal way to make the most of it. With its clean lines and modern design, a geometric pool complements Houston’s contemporary home styles and maximizes backyard space, even in tight urban lots. Plus, it pairs perfectly with outdoor kitchens, covered patios, and the low-maintenance landscaping so many Houston homeowners love. It’s not just a pool — it’s a year-round lifestyle upgrade.

When to Build: Outdoor Living

When Is the Best Time to Build? A Seasonal Guide to Outdoor Living Projects in Houston

At Your Great Outdoors, we know that timing can make all the difference when it comes to planning your perfect outdoor space. Whether you’re dreaming of a custom pool, a cozy firepit, or an expansive patio and pergola, each element of your backyard build comes with ideal windows for construction.

Here’s a seasonal guide to help you understand the best time to start your outdoor living project—so you get the best weather, availability, and results.

🏊 Best Time to Build a Pool: Fall & Winter

Why Fall/Winter?
While most people think summer is pool season (and it is—for swimming!), the best time to build a pool in Houston is in the fall or winter. That’s when builders have more availability, permitting is quicker, and you avoid delays due to extreme heat or spring rain.

Benefits of building in the off-season:

  • Be ready to swim by spring/summer

  • Potential for better pricing and shorter timelines

  • Less disruption during peak entertaining months

💡 Pro Tip: Add landscaping and lighting during the cooler months to create a finished, resort-style space before the season begins.

🧱 Best Time to Build a Patio: Late Winter to Early Spring

Why Late Winter?
Houston’s mild winters make it easier to pour concrete, lay pavers, or install stonework before the weather heats up. Starting your patio build in late winter gives you ample time to enjoy it in the spring and summer without construction delays.

Bonus: You’ll beat the spring rush when outdoor project requests typically spike.

🍳 Best Time to Build an Outdoor Kitchen: Spring or Fall

Why Spring or Fall?
Outdoor kitchens involve multiple components—gas lines, plumbing, electrical work, and appliance installation. The mild weather in spring and fall provides the best working conditions for crews, and ensures no component is rushed or delayed due to extreme temperatures.

Spring Build: Perfect for hosting Mother’s Day brunch or a Memorial Day BBQ.
Fall Build: Ideal for enjoying football season and holiday entertaining outdoors.

🔥 Don’t forget to add:

  • A covered pergola or shade structure

  • Outdoor lighting for evening gatherings

  • Custom stone or granite countertops for durability

🔥 Best Time to Build a Fire Pit or Fireplace: Summer to Early Fall

Why Summer/Fall?
It might sound counterintuitive, but summer is the best time to build a fire feature in Houston. Crews can complete work quickly in dry conditions—and you’ll have your firepit or fireplace ready for crisp fall evenings and winter hangouts.

Popular options in Houston:

  • Gas fire bowls and linear fire features

  • Built-in stone fireplaces with seating

  • Firepits with integrated seating walls or patios

🌿 Best Time to Build a Pergola or Shade Structure: Year-Round (But Plan Ahead)

Why Year-Round?
Pergolas and arbors are among the most flexible projects we build. Thanks to Houston’s warm climate, they can be installed nearly any time of year. That said, spring and early summer are the most popular—so booking early helps secure your place on the schedule.

Benefits of a well-timed pergola project:

  • Shade during the peak of summer

  • Design flexibility with integrated fans, lighting, or retractable canopies

  • Great visual structure for climbing vines or custom décor

Pool Accessories to Elevate Your Backyard Oasis

Your Great Outdoors | Custom Pools & Outdoor Living in Houston, TX

Having a custom pool in your backyard is the ultimate way to beat the Houston heat — but if you really want to turn your space into a resort-worthy retreat, it’s all about the accessories. The right pool accessories don’t just make your space look better — they enhance safety, functionality, and fun.

At Your Great Outdoors, we design and build luxury pools and outdoor living spaces tailored to Texas lifestyles. Once your dream pool is installed, it’s time to accessorize. Here are the top pool accessories every homeowner should consider:

1. LED Pool Lighting

Whether you want to enjoy a late-night swim or add ambiance to your outdoor space, LED lighting is a must. These energy-efficient lights can be installed inside the pool, along the edges, or throughout your landscaping for a glowing, inviting look.

Bonus Tip: Opt for color-changing LEDs to create different moods — from party vibes to relaxing spa nights.

2. Tanning Ledge Furniture

If your pool includes a tanning ledge (also called a sun shelf), don’t let that space go to waste! Add in-pool loungers like Ledge Loungers made from durable, UV-resistant materials. These chairs are perfect for catching rays while staying cool in shallow water.

Why Houston homeowners love it: They’re perfect for sunbathing, supervising kids, or sipping a drink without ever leaving the pool.

3. Automatic Pool Cleaner

Cleaning your pool manually takes time, and in Texas, debris from trees and winds can accumulate fast. A robotic or suction-side pool cleaner can keep your water sparkling with minimal effort.

Popular options include:

  • Robotic cleaners like the Dolphin Premier

  • Pressure-side cleaners like Polaris

  • Suction-side cleaners like the Hayward Navigator

Investing in an automatic cleaner saves time and helps your filtration system last longer.

4. Pool Floats and Inflatables

You can’t go wrong with a set of fun pool floats. From oversized flamingos to floating loungers with cupholders, pool inflatables bring instant fun to any backyard pool party.

Pro Tip: Keep a mix of adult and kid-friendly floats on hand — and consider a storage bin to keep everything organized when not in use.

5. Outdoor Shower

An outdoor shower is more than just a luxury feature — it’s practical. It keeps dirt, grass, and sunscreen out of your pool and allows swimmers to rinse off before heading inside.

Want to go luxe? Add natural stone, privacy screening, or rainfall shower heads to blend functionality with spa-like aesthetics.

6. Outdoor Kitchen & Bar Area

Okay, technically not just an accessory — but an outdoor kitchen truly transforms your pool area into a full-service entertainment zone. From built-in grills and fridges to cocktail stations and covered seating, it’s a game-changer for weekend gatherings.

At Your Great Outdoors, we build custom outdoor kitchens that match your pool’s style and your family’s needs — making it easy to go from swimming to sizzling without ever stepping inside.

7. Shade Structures

In the Houston sun, a little shade goes a long way. Whether it’s a pergola, umbrella, or retractable awning, having shaded areas gives guests a place to cool down and relax between swims.

Popular choices include:

  • Cantilever umbrellas for flexible coverage

  • Custom-built pergolas with fans or lights

  • Shade sails for modern, minimalist style

8. Bluetooth Pool Speakers

Bring the soundtrack to your summer with weatherproof Bluetooth speakers made for outdoor use. Whether mounted near the pool or floating in the water, these speakers let you stream your favorite playlists without worrying about water damage.

Look for:

  • Waterproof rating (IPX7 or higher)

  • Long battery life

  • Clear sound quality with outdoor range

9. Heaters or Chillers

Want to extend your swim season? A pool heater makes your pool usable even during Houston’s cooler months, while a chiller keeps the water refreshing in the blazing heat of summer.

Combination units are available for year-round comfort and are especially popular with homeowners who use their pools for exercise or entertaining.

10. Poolside Fire Features

Fire bowls, fire pits, or even torches create a dramatic contrast against your pool’s cool water. These features not only elevate the design but also allow you to enjoy the space even after the sun sets.

Bonus: Fire features create great ambiance for parties, dinners, or romantic evenings by the pool.

11. Safety Accessories

Even if your pool is designed beautifully, safety should always come first. Every Houston-area pool should be equipped with a few essentials:

  • Pool alarms (for doors or the water surface)

  • Removable fencing (especially for families with small kids or pets)

  • Life rings or reaching poles

  • Non-slip decking surfaces

Peace of mind is the ultimate accessory.

12. Smart Pool Automation Systems

Manage your pool from your phone. With automation, you can control lighting, pumps, heaters, water features, and even chemical levels — all from an app. Ideal for busy homeowners who want low-maintenance luxury.

Build Your Dream Backyard with Your Great Outdoors

Your pool is the heart of your outdoor living space — and the right accessories make it even more enjoyable. Whether you’re starting with a brand-new design or upgrading an existing pool, we’re here to help.

How to Maximize Your Small Houston Backyard

Big Ideas for Small Outdoor Spaces in Houston

Custom Designs Built for Texas Living by Your Great Outdoors

In Houston, outdoor living isn’t just a luxury — it’s a lifestyle. But what if your backyard isn’t the biggest on the block?

Here at Your Great Outdoors, we specialize in turning every square foot into something special. Whether you’re dreaming of a cozy retreat or a full-featured outdoor experience, your small backyard holds more potential than you think.

Let’s talk about how to make the most of it.

Why Small Backyards Can Be Big Wins

First things first — small doesn’t mean limited. In fact, compact spaces often make for the most creative, functional, and intentional designs. With less area to manage, you can focus your investment on high-impact features and finishes, creating a curated outdoor space that feels just right for your home and lifestyle.

Plus, in Houston’s hot and humid climate, having a smartly shaded, easy-to-maintain outdoor space is a win no matter the size.

Smart Ideas to Maximize Your Small Backyard in Houston

Here’s how we help Houston homeowners transform small yards into big experiences:

✅ Build a Plunge or Cocktail Pool

Not every yard has space for a sprawling resort-style pool — but that doesn’t mean you have to skip it altogether.

A plunge pool or cocktail pool gives you all the luxury of water without taking up your entire backyard. These compact pools are perfect for soaking, cooling off, or lounging with a drink. Add a tanning ledge or built-in bench seating, and suddenly your small pool becomes a multifunctional oasis.

➡️ Pro Tip: Pair your pool with artificial turf or pavers for a seamless, low-maintenance look.

✅ Use Built-In Features to Save Space

Built-in seating, planters, fire pits, or even grilling stations eliminate the need for bulky furniture or add-ons. These elements keep your layout clean and efficient while offering style and function.

➡️ Think: a built-in bench along the fence line, a corner fireplace with integrated lighting, or a compact outdoor kitchen with storage tucked underneath.

✅ Turf + Pavers = Smart Surface Strategy

Grass is great… until it’s patchy, muddy, or hard to mow in small corners. That’s why synthetic turf is one of the best upgrades for small yards in Houston. It’s green all year, low maintenance, and works beautifully alongside pavers or concrete pads for a modern, tidy look.

Want to go even more creative? We love installing paver-turf combos in geometric patterns to make your space feel bigger and more dynamic.

✅ Add Vertical Interest

When you can’t build out, build up. Use your vertical space for style and function:

  • Privacy walls with modern wood slats

  • Vertical gardens or herb walls

  • Pergolas or shade structures with hanging lights

  • Tall planters to draw the eye upward

This not only adds visual interest, but also gives you privacy — which is key in close-quarter neighborhoods.

✅ Define Zones

Even in small spaces, zoning is everything. By visually dividing your backyard into areas — like a lounge zone, dining nook, or soaking area — you make your space feel larger and more purposeful.

We often use materials, color changes, or even slight elevation shifts (like a step up to the hot tub) to define zones without creating barriers.

✅ Go Big on Lighting

When the sun goes down, smart lighting transforms your backyard. In smaller yards, thoughtful outdoor lighting adds ambiance, enhances safety, and creates depth.

We recommend using a mix of:

  • Pathway lights to guide movement

  • Wall wash lights for texture

  • String lights or sconces for charm and warmth

At Your Great Outdoors, we design outdoor lighting systems that work with your layout and lifestyle — perfect for warm Houston evenings that stretch long into the night.

Small Backyard, Big Personality

The key to maximizing your small backyard is to treat it like an extension of your home — not just an afterthought. It should reflect your style, serve your needs, and make you want to step outside and stay awhile.

We’re proud to help Houston homeowners bring their small-space dreams to life with custom designs that work hard and look incredible.

Our Process Makes All the Difference

At Your Great Outdoors, we handle the entire transformation — from custom pool building and patio design to turf, lighting, pergolas, and more. We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. Every square inch is customized for you.

And whether your yard is big or small, one thing’s non-negotiable:

➡️ Who you build with matters.

Tips On Picking Pool Tile

How to Pick the Right Pool Tile for Your Pool

A Design Guide from Your Great Outdoors in Katy, TX

Choosing the right tile for your custom pool is more than just picking a color or pattern—it’s about selecting the materials and design details that reflect your personal style while withstanding the Texas sun, pool chemicals, and outdoor elements.

At Your Great Outdoors, we’ve been building luxury outdoor living spaces and custom pools in Katy and Greater Houston since 2008. Here’s our expert guide to help you choose the perfect pool tile for your backyard oasis.

.

Why Pool Tile Matters

Pool tile isn’t just decorative—it’s functional, too. It:

  • Protects the pool’s waterline and edges from wear

  • Adds style, color, and texture to your pool design

  • Makes cleaning easier by resisting algae and build-up

  • Increases the longevity and value of your pool

In a place like Houston, where pools are used almost year-round (except when it’s raining), choosing the right tile plays a big role in both beauty and durability.

drone shot of a modern clean lined pool in cypress texas.

Types of Pool Tiles (And What They’re Best For) Here’s a breakdown of the most popular tile materials and where they shine:

  1. Glass Tile

  • Look: Sleek, modern, reflective; comes in mosaics or large pieces

  • Best For: Waterline, sun shelves, accent walls, spillovers

  • Pros: Fade-resistant, easy to clean, offers high-end luxury appeal

  • Things to Consider: Pricier than other options; installation requires a skilled tile expert

Pro Tip: Glass tile is a favorite for creating visual movement with light reflection, especially when paired with LED lighting or waterfalls.

  1. Porcelain or Ceramic Tile

  • Look: Classic and versatile; available in tons of styles and finishes

  • Best For: Waterlines, spa areas, and full pool tiling

  • Pros: Budget-friendly, durable, and easy to customize

  • Things to Consider: Can chip under heavy impact; choose pool-rated options for outdoor use

Porcelain tile is a great choice for homeowners looking for durability with a lower price point, while still having room to play with patterns and finishes.

  1. Natural Stone Tile (Slate, Travertine, Granite)

  • Look: Earthy, timeless, and elegant; adds a luxury, natural feel

  • Best For: Pool coping, water features, raised walls

  • Pros: Blends beautifully with landscaping and other outdoor elements

  • Things to Consider: Requires sealing; may get hot underfoot or slippery when wet

Stone tile pairs beautifully with the Texas landscape and creates a seamless indoor-outdoor transition for your backyard design.

  1. Mosaic Tile

  • Look: Eye-catching, detailed, colorful patterns and imagery

  • Best For: Waterline borders, pool murals, spas, and custom features

  • Pros: Unique, customizable, adds a bold statement

  • Things to Consider: Higher labor costs for intricate installs; not always ideal for high-traffic surfaces

Mosaic tile is great for making your pool uniquely yours. From ocean-themed murals to geometric borders, it allows endless creativity.

  1. Tile-Look Finishes (Alternative Surfaces) Some modern pools now use specialty surfaces like quartz, pebble, or exposed aggregate finishes that mimic the look of tile while offering a smoother feel underfoot.

  • Pros: Sleek appearance, integrated into pool interior

  • Things to Consider: Less customizable in patterns and may not work for waterlines or decorative borders

How to Choose the Right Pool Tile for Your Backyard

  1. Consider Your Style Are you going for a sleek, modern look or something more natural and rustic? Your tile selection sets the tone. Glass or porcelain fits a clean, contemporary pool design. Travertine or natural stone tiles lean more traditional or Mediterranean.

  2. Match Your Surroundings Look at your patio materials, home exterior, and landscaping. We recommend choosing pool tile that complements existing textures and tones in your outdoor living area.

At Your Great Outdoors, our team brings sample tiles to your home and creates custom design boards so you can see exactly how everything will blend.

  1. Think About Function

  • Waterline tiles: Choose materials that resist staining and calcium build-up

  • Sun shelves and steps: Go for non-slip finishes and cooler-toned surfaces

  • Raised features or spas: Use decorative tile for a bold focal point

Bonus Tip: In hot Katy summers, lighter-colored tile stays cooler underfoot compared to dark tile.

  1. Keep Maintenance in Mind Glass and porcelain are low-maintenance options, while natural stone may require more upkeep, including sealing and occasional cleaning to prevent mildew or discoloration.

For a busy family pool, we often recommend a durable, easy-to-clean tile paired with darker grout to hide wear.

  1. Look at Samples in Natural Light Colors can look very different in sunlight versus under water. Always review tile samples:

  • Dry and wet

  • In full sun and shade

  • Next to your pool plaster or interior finish

This ensures the final look matches your vision, day and night.

Budgeting for Pool Tile It’s important to understand how tile fits into your overall pool budget. Tile prices range widely:

  • Basic ceramic tiles: $5 to $15 per square foot

  • Mid-range porcelain or glass: $15 to $30 per square foot

  • Premium natural stone or custom mosaic: $30+ per square foot

Installation adds to the total cost, especially for detailed mosaic designs or difficult angles. We always provide transparent pricing, so you know exactly what to expect.

Our Favorite Pool Tile Combos for Texas Backyards Need some inspiration? Here are a few tile combinations that work beautifully in Katy-area backyards:

  1. Glass Tile Waterline + Travertine Coping Elegant, timeless, and adds texture without overwhelming the space.

  2. Blue Porcelain Mosaic + White Plaster Interior Bright, beachy, and reflects light beautifully in the Texas sun.

  3. Natural Slate on Raised Spa Wall + Smooth Glass on Baja Shelf Perfect blend of rustic and refined for a resort-inspired retreat.

  4. Gray Ceramic Waterline + Dark Pebble Interior Subtle, sleek, and modern—ideal for contemporary homes.

How to Decide if You Need a Tanning Ledge

Tanning Ledges, also known as Sun Shelves

Custom Designs Built for Texas Living by Your Great Outdoors

Looking to build a custom pool in Houston or transform your entire backyard? Whether you’re dreaming of a modern, clean-lined pool or a luxurious outdoor living space, Your Great Outdoors designs and builds custom environments tailored to your space, your style, and our Texas climate. And one of the most asked-about features lately? Tanning ledges, also known as sun shelves or Baja shelves.

Let’s explore what a tanning ledge is, why it’s so popular with Houston-area homeowners, and how to know if it’s the right addition for your pool project.

What is a  Tanning Ledge?

When designing your dream backyard oasis, every detail counts — from the pool shape to water features and beyond.

One increasingly popular addition among Houston-area homeowners is the tanning ledge, also known as a Baja shelf, sun shelf, or shallow lounging area. But is it the right feature for your pool?

Here’s how to decide if a tanning ledge fits your lifestyle, needs, and backyard vision.

Who Benefits the Most from a Tanning Ledge

1. Families with Young Children

If you have toddlers or small children, a tanning ledge offers a shallow area where they can splash and play under supervision. It creates a safe, contained environment that introduces little ones to water confidently—without diving into the deep end

2. Sun Seekers and Loungers

Want the ultimate spot for soaking up the sun while staying cool? Tanning ledges are made for in-water lounging. Add a couple of in-pool chaise lounges and enjoy that resort-style experience right in your own Houston backyard.

3. Pet Owners

Many Houston pet owners love having a shallow ledge where dogs can safely splash, cool off, or exit the pool with ease. Many of our clients in Texas consider it a must-have feature for their water-loving furry family members.

4. Entertainers and Hosts

Tanning ledges are a crowd-pleaser. They offer a place for guests to sit, socialize, and cool off without committing to a full swim. Add some bubblers or a shade umbrella, and you’ve got a backyard party hotspot.

Things to Consider Before adding a Tanning Ledge

Pool Size & Shape

In smaller pools, a tanning ledge can take up valuable swim space. Consider how often you’ll use it versus the total swimming area available.

Design Aesthetic

Tanning ledges create a luxurious, resort-like look — but they need to blend with your pool’s overall design. Our Regal Pools design team can help you visualize how it will look with 3D renderings before construction begins.

Budget

Adding a tanning ledge will slightly increase your project cost, especially if you include features like bubblers, umbrella sleeves, or in-pool loungers. But for many homeowners, the added comfort and style are well worth it.

Sun Exposure

Given Houston’s hot summers, you’ll want to think about sun and shade. South-facing tanning ledges are perfect for sunbathing, but you may want to add a pergola or umbrella for some reprieve from the Texas heat.

What is important to my Family

Think about how your family uses the pool. Do your kids love to play in shallow water? Do you have elderly family members who would enjoy sitting comfortably in the pool without swimming? Do you like relaxing in the water with a book or a drink? A tanning ledge can serve a wide range of age groups and activity levels, making it a family-friendly addition. But if your household is more about lap swimming or active water sports, you may want to balance the ledge size with your swim space needs.

Pool Type & Tanning Ledge Compatibility

Not all pools are built the same—and tanning ledges may work better in certain materials than others:

  • Gunite (Concrete): Fully customizable and incredibly durable. Great for homeowners who want a bespoke ledge with any shape or size.

  • Fiberglass: Many fiberglass pools come with built-in tanning ledges as part of their mold. They’re smooth, non-slip, and typically quicker to install.

  • Vinyl: Tanning ledges are trickier here and often require careful reinforcement due to liner concerns. They’re still doable, but not as common.

Custom Features to Elevate Your Tanning Ledge & Tanning Ledge Compatibility

Want to level up your pool’s wow factor? Here are some extras we recommend:

  • Bubblers or fountains: Create a soothing sound and cooling effect.

  • LED lights: Light up the ledge area at night for ambiance.

  • Umbrella sleeves: Add a stylish sun umbrella directly into the ledge.

  • Non-slip finishes: Especially important if pets or kids will be using the area.

Choosing the Right Depth & Dimensions

Tanning ledges are usually built 6 to 12 inches deep:

  • 6–8 inches: Ideal for small children or just dipping your toes.

  • 9–12 inches: Perfect for in-pool furniture and full-body lounging.

You’ll also want to think about how wide and long the ledge should be. A good rule of thumb? If you want to comfortably fit two lounge chairs and still have space to move, plan for at least 5 feet in width.

Text content

If you value comfort, style, and versatile use of your pool space, a tanning ledge can be a game-changer. It enhances your pool’s function, offers aesthetic appeal, and provides a shallow haven for kids, pets, or just unwinding after a long Houston day.

At Your Great Outdoors, we specialize in creating custom pools tailored to your lifestyle. Whether you want a sleek modern design or a family-friendly retreat, we can help you decide whether a tanning ledge is right for you — and design it to perfection!
