When Is the Best Time to Build? A Seasonal Guide to Outdoor Living Projects in Houston

At Your Great Outdoors, we know that timing can make all the difference when it comes to planning your perfect outdoor space. Whether you’re dreaming of a custom pool, a cozy firepit, or an expansive patio and pergola, each element of your backyard build comes with ideal windows for construction.

Here’s a seasonal guide to help you understand the best time to start your outdoor living project—so you get the best weather, availability, and results.

🏊 Best Time to Build a Pool: Fall & Winter

Why Fall/Winter?
While most people think summer is pool season (and it is—for swimming!), the best time to build a pool in Houston is in the fall or winter. That’s when builders have more availability, permitting is quicker, and you avoid delays due to extreme heat or spring rain.

Benefits of building in the off-season:

  • Be ready to swim by spring/summer

  • Potential for better pricing and shorter timelines

  • Less disruption during peak entertaining months

💡 Pro Tip: Add landscaping and lighting during the cooler months to create a finished, resort-style space before the season begins.

🧱 Best Time to Build a Patio: Late Winter to Early Spring

Why Late Winter?
Houston’s mild winters make it easier to pour concrete, lay pavers, or install stonework before the weather heats up. Starting your patio build in late winter gives you ample time to enjoy it in the spring and summer without construction delays.

Bonus: You’ll beat the spring rush when outdoor project requests typically spike.

🍳 Best Time to Build an Outdoor Kitchen: Spring or Fall

Why Spring or Fall?
Outdoor kitchens involve multiple components—gas lines, plumbing, electrical work, and appliance installation. The mild weather in spring and fall provides the best working conditions for crews, and ensures no component is rushed or delayed due to extreme temperatures.

Spring Build: Perfect for hosting Mother’s Day brunch or a Memorial Day BBQ.
Fall Build: Ideal for enjoying football season and holiday entertaining outdoors.

🔥 Don’t forget to add:

  • A covered pergola or shade structure

  • Outdoor lighting for evening gatherings

  • Custom stone or granite countertops for durability

🔥 Best Time to Build a Fire Pit or Fireplace: Summer to Early Fall

Why Summer/Fall?
It might sound counterintuitive, but summer is the best time to build a fire feature in Houston. Crews can complete work quickly in dry conditions—and you’ll have your firepit or fireplace ready for crisp fall evenings and winter hangouts.

Popular options in Houston:

  • Gas fire bowls and linear fire features

  • Built-in stone fireplaces with seating

  • Firepits with integrated seating walls or patios

🌿 Best Time to Build a Pergola or Shade Structure: Year-Round (But Plan Ahead)

Why Year-Round?
Pergolas and arbors are among the most flexible projects we build. Thanks to Houston’s warm climate, they can be installed nearly any time of year. That said, spring and early summer are the most popular—so booking early helps secure your place on the schedule.

Benefits of a well-timed pergola project:

  • Shade during the peak of summer

  • Design flexibility with integrated fans, lighting, or retractable canopies

  • Great visual structure for climbing vines or custom décor

Pool Accessories to Elevate Your Backyard Oasis

Your Great Outdoors | Custom Pools & Outdoor Living in Houston, TX

Having a custom pool in your backyard is the ultimate way to beat the Houston heat — but if you really want to turn your space into a resort-worthy retreat, it’s all about the accessories. The right pool accessories don’t just make your space look better — they enhance safety, functionality, and fun.

At Your Great Outdoors, we design and build luxury pools and outdoor living spaces tailored to Texas lifestyles. Once your dream pool is installed, it’s time to accessorize. Here are the top pool accessories every homeowner should consider:

1. LED Pool Lighting

Whether you want to enjoy a late-night swim or add ambiance to your outdoor space, LED lighting is a must. These energy-efficient lights can be installed inside the pool, along the edges, or throughout your landscaping for a glowing, inviting look.

Bonus Tip: Opt for color-changing LEDs to create different moods — from party vibes to relaxing spa nights.

2. Tanning Ledge Furniture

If your pool includes a tanning ledge (also called a sun shelf), don’t let that space go to waste! Add in-pool loungers like Ledge Loungers made from durable, UV-resistant materials. These chairs are perfect for catching rays while staying cool in shallow water.

Why Houston homeowners love it: They’re perfect for sunbathing, supervising kids, or sipping a drink without ever leaving the pool.

3. Automatic Pool Cleaner

Cleaning your pool manually takes time, and in Texas, debris from trees and winds can accumulate fast. A robotic or suction-side pool cleaner can keep your water sparkling with minimal effort.

Popular options include:

  • Robotic cleaners like the Dolphin Premier

  • Pressure-side cleaners like Polaris

  • Suction-side cleaners like the Hayward Navigator

Investing in an automatic cleaner saves time and helps your filtration system last longer.

4. Pool Floats and Inflatables

You can’t go wrong with a set of fun pool floats. From oversized flamingos to floating loungers with cupholders, pool inflatables bring instant fun to any backyard pool party.

Pro Tip: Keep a mix of adult and kid-friendly floats on hand — and consider a storage bin to keep everything organized when not in use.

5. Outdoor Shower

An outdoor shower is more than just a luxury feature — it’s practical. It keeps dirt, grass, and sunscreen out of your pool and allows swimmers to rinse off before heading inside.

Want to go luxe? Add natural stone, privacy screening, or rainfall shower heads to blend functionality with spa-like aesthetics.

6. Outdoor Kitchen & Bar Area

Okay, technically not just an accessory — but an outdoor kitchen truly transforms your pool area into a full-service entertainment zone. From built-in grills and fridges to cocktail stations and covered seating, it’s a game-changer for weekend gatherings.

At Your Great Outdoors, we build custom outdoor kitchens that match your pool’s style and your family’s needs — making it easy to go from swimming to sizzling without ever stepping inside.

7. Shade Structures

In the Houston sun, a little shade goes a long way. Whether it’s a pergola, umbrella, or retractable awning, having shaded areas gives guests a place to cool down and relax between swims.

Popular choices include:

  • Cantilever umbrellas for flexible coverage

  • Custom-built pergolas with fans or lights

  • Shade sails for modern, minimalist style

8. Bluetooth Pool Speakers

Bring the soundtrack to your summer with weatherproof Bluetooth speakers made for outdoor use. Whether mounted near the pool or floating in the water, these speakers let you stream your favorite playlists without worrying about water damage.

Look for:

  • Waterproof rating (IPX7 or higher)

  • Long battery life

  • Clear sound quality with outdoor range

9. Heaters or Chillers

Want to extend your swim season? A pool heater makes your pool usable even during Houston’s cooler months, while a chiller keeps the water refreshing in the blazing heat of summer.

Combination units are available for year-round comfort and are especially popular with homeowners who use their pools for exercise or entertaining.

10. Poolside Fire Features

Fire bowls, fire pits, or even torches create a dramatic contrast against your pool’s cool water. These features not only elevate the design but also allow you to enjoy the space even after the sun sets.

Bonus: Fire features create great ambiance for parties, dinners, or romantic evenings by the pool.

11. Safety Accessories

Even if your pool is designed beautifully, safety should always come first. Every Houston-area pool should be equipped with a few essentials:

  • Pool alarms (for doors or the water surface)

  • Removable fencing (especially for families with small kids or pets)

  • Life rings or reaching poles

  • Non-slip decking surfaces

Peace of mind is the ultimate accessory.

12. Smart Pool Automation Systems

Manage your pool from your phone. With automation, you can control lighting, pumps, heaters, water features, and even chemical levels — all from an app. Ideal for busy homeowners who want low-maintenance luxury.

Build Your Dream Backyard with Your Great Outdoors

Your pool is the heart of your outdoor living space — and the right accessories make it even more enjoyable. Whether you’re starting with a brand-new design or upgrading an existing pool, we’re here to help.

How to Maximize Your Small Houston Backyard

Big Ideas for Small Outdoor Spaces in Houston

Custom Designs Built for Texas Living by Your Great Outdoors

In Houston, outdoor living isn’t just a luxury — it’s a lifestyle. But what if your backyard isn’t the biggest on the block?

Here at Your Great Outdoors, we specialize in turning every square foot into something special. Whether you’re dreaming of a cozy retreat or a full-featured outdoor experience, your small backyard holds more potential than you think.

Let’s talk about how to make the most of it.

Why Small Backyards Can Be Big Wins

First things first — small doesn’t mean limited. In fact, compact spaces often make for the most creative, functional, and intentional designs. With less area to manage, you can focus your investment on high-impact features and finishes, creating a curated outdoor space that feels just right for your home and lifestyle.

Plus, in Houston’s hot and humid climate, having a smartly shaded, easy-to-maintain outdoor space is a win no matter the size.

Smart Ideas to Maximize Your Small Backyard in Houston

Here’s how we help Houston homeowners transform small yards into big experiences:

✅ Build a Plunge or Cocktail Pool

Not every yard has space for a sprawling resort-style pool — but that doesn’t mean you have to skip it altogether.

A plunge pool or cocktail pool gives you all the luxury of water without taking up your entire backyard. These compact pools are perfect for soaking, cooling off, or lounging with a drink. Add a tanning ledge or built-in bench seating, and suddenly your small pool becomes a multifunctional oasis.

➡️ Pro Tip: Pair your pool with artificial turf or pavers for a seamless, low-maintenance look.

✅ Use Built-In Features to Save Space

Built-in seating, planters, fire pits, or even grilling stations eliminate the need for bulky furniture or add-ons. These elements keep your layout clean and efficient while offering style and function.

➡️ Think: a built-in bench along the fence line, a corner fireplace with integrated lighting, or a compact outdoor kitchen with storage tucked underneath.

✅ Turf + Pavers = Smart Surface Strategy

Grass is great… until it’s patchy, muddy, or hard to mow in small corners. That’s why synthetic turf is one of the best upgrades for small yards in Houston. It’s green all year, low maintenance, and works beautifully alongside pavers or concrete pads for a modern, tidy look.

Want to go even more creative? We love installing paver-turf combos in geometric patterns to make your space feel bigger and more dynamic.

✅ Add Vertical Interest

When you can’t build out, build up. Use your vertical space for style and function:

  • Privacy walls with modern wood slats

  • Vertical gardens or herb walls

  • Pergolas or shade structures with hanging lights

  • Tall planters to draw the eye upward

This not only adds visual interest, but also gives you privacy — which is key in close-quarter neighborhoods.

✅ Define Zones

Even in small spaces, zoning is everything. By visually dividing your backyard into areas — like a lounge zone, dining nook, or soaking area — you make your space feel larger and more purposeful.

We often use materials, color changes, or even slight elevation shifts (like a step up to the hot tub) to define zones without creating barriers.

✅ Go Big on Lighting

When the sun goes down, smart lighting transforms your backyard. In smaller yards, thoughtful outdoor lighting adds ambiance, enhances safety, and creates depth.

We recommend using a mix of:

  • Pathway lights to guide movement

  • Wall wash lights for texture

  • String lights or sconces for charm and warmth

At Your Great Outdoors, we design outdoor lighting systems that work with your layout and lifestyle — perfect for warm Houston evenings that stretch long into the night.

Small Backyard, Big Personality

The key to maximizing your small backyard is to treat it like an extension of your home — not just an afterthought. It should reflect your style, serve your needs, and make you want to step outside and stay awhile.

We’re proud to help Houston homeowners bring their small-space dreams to life with custom designs that work hard and look incredible.

Our Process Makes All the Difference

At Your Great Outdoors, we handle the entire transformation — from custom pool building and patio design to turf, lighting, pergolas, and more. We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. Every square inch is customized for you.

And whether your yard is big or small, one thing’s non-negotiable:

➡️ Who you build with matters.

Cost Breakdown: Building an Outdoor Living Space

, , , , , , , , ,

Thinking about upgrading your backyard? You’re not alone. Houston homeowners love spending time outside, and building an outdoor living space is one of the best ways to add comfort, style, and value to your home.

At Your Great Outdoors, we design and build custom outdoor spaces that fit your life and your budget. In this guide, we’ll break down what goes into the cost of an outdoor living space—so you know what to expect before you start.

What Is an Outdoor Living Space?

An outdoor living space is more than just a patio. It’s a space designed to feel like part of your home—only outside. It might include:

  • A patio or deck

  • A covered pergola or roof structure

  • An outdoor kitchen or grill station

  • A fire pit or fireplace

  • Built-in seating

  • Custom lighting

  • Landscaping and drainage

Every project is different. Some are simple and cozy, while others are full backyard makeovers.

Custom Outdoor Living Area

What Affects the Cost?

Outdoor projects can cost anywhere from a few thousand dollars to over $100,000, depending on what you want. Here are the biggest factors that impact price:

1. Project Size

The bigger your space, the more materials and labor it takes. OR

The more square footage you’re working with—and the more features you want to include—the more materials and labor will be required. A simple grill island will cost less than a full outdoor kitchen with a bar, pizza oven, and pergola. Most of clients end up going for the full kitchen, because if you use it then that space is worth every penny. With the added space you can add storage that can be used for all your outdoor needs!

2. Design Complexity

Custom layouts, curves, and built-in features cost more than basic shapes and surfaces. OR

Custom layouts, multi-level patios, integrated lighting, or unique architectural touches (like a curved bar or floating steps) take more time to plan and build—which can increase overall cost.

3. Materials

Natural stone, high-end pavers, and premium wood look great and last longer—but they cost more than standard options. OR

Premium materials like granite countertops, stacked stone, custom pavers, or cedar pergolas come at a higher price, but they also last longer and look more upscale. There are also budget-friendly alternatives that still look great and perform well.

4. Utilities

Adding gas lines, electrical wiring, or plumbing for an outdoor kitchen or lighting adds cost. OR

Need gas lines for your grill? Electrical for lighting and outlets? Plumbing for a sink or outdoor shower? These systems need to be safely installed and routed, and that can add to the total investment.

5. Site Conditions

Sloped yards, drainage problems, or removing old patios can increase the project budget.  OR

If your yard needs leveling, grading, or demolition of old structures, that prep work can affect both time and budget. Same goes for hard-to-access properties that require special equipment.

6. Appliances & Features

Built-in grills, sinks, refrigerators, wine coolers, smokers, ice makers—you name it. The number and quality of appliances you choose will directly affect cost. Higher-end brands and smart features (like app-controlled lighting or audio) will also add to the price tag.

What Does an Outdoor Space Typically Include?

Here’s a simple breakdown of popular features and what affects their cost:

Feature What Impacts Price
Patio or Deck Size, materials, surface style
Covered Structure Roofing type, ceiling details, fans/lights
Outdoor Kitchen Appliances, countertops, plumbing/electric
Fire Pit or Fireplace Gas or wood-burning, size, seating area
Landscaping Plants, irrigation, grading, and drainage solutions

Want a full backyard transformation? These features can be combined into one beautiful, functional space. One question to ask yourself is “what are the most important features to me,” and that is where you should spend the most money. If your grill is THE most important thing, then we recommend choosing a less expensive countertop so you can splurge on appliances! It’s all about give and take, and as your designers we are here to help you accomplish your goals without feeling like you paid for things that are not as important to you. This is YOUR outdoor, we are just here to make it great!

Outdoor Backyard Design Houston

Houston-Specific Tips

Houston weather can be hot, humid, and rainy. When we design outdoor spaces, we plan for:

  • Shade and airflow for summer comfort – The Texas sun is no joke. A covered structure like a pergola, pavilion, or extended patio roof will help block UV rays, protect your appliances, and make the space more comfortable during summer months.

Bonus: Shade also helps prevent fading, warping, and heat buildup on countertops and seating.

  • Drainage systems to protect your yard and foundation – Heavy Houston rains can flood low-lying areas quickly. Make sure your outdoor kitchen is sloped properly for drainage and that any sinks or water features are connected to appropriate drainage lines. We always assess the yard’s grading before installation.

  • Durable materials that can handle Texas heat and storms- Houston’s climate is hot, humid, and often wet. Opt for materials that can handle moisture, sun exposure, and sudden temperature swings. Stainless steel appliances, sealed stone countertops, and weatherproof cabinets (like marine-grade polymer or teak) will perform best over time.

  • Think Mosquito Control – Outdoor kitchens get the most use in warm weather—but so do Houston mosquitoes. Consider adding a fan system, citronella planters, or even a built-in misting or mosquito control system to keep bugs at bay.

Our team knows what works in our climate—and what doesn’t, so don’t stress too much over the technical stuff. We also know what your HOA and the required permits are!
