Luxury Backyard Tips You NEED!

By Your Great Outdoors – Houston’s Custom Outdoor Living Experts

Luxury living doesn’t stop at your back door. In Houston, where outdoor living is practically a lifestyle, a thoughtfully designed backyard can become the most valuable and enjoyable part of your home. From custom pools to elevated outdoor kitchens, luxury backyards are about blending comfort, beauty, and functionality into one seamless experience.

At Your Great Outdoors, we specialize in transforming ordinary backyards into luxury outdoor retreats. Whether you’re starting from scratch or upgrading an existing space, these luxury backyard tips will help you design an outdoor oasis that feels like a five-star resort—right at home.

1. Start With a Master Plan (Luxury Is Intentional)

The foundation of any luxury backyard is intentional design. High-end outdoor spaces don’t happen by accident—they’re carefully planned to ensure flow, balance, and purpose.

Before choosing finishes or features, consider:

How you’ll use the space (entertaining, relaxing, family time)
Sightlines from inside your home
Sun exposure and shade needs
Privacy and noise control
Future upgrades or phases

A professional backyard designer can help you visualize the entire space as one cohesive environment rather than a collection of separate features. This is where luxury truly begins.

2. Invest in a Custom Pool That Feels Like a Resort

A luxury backyard in Houston often centers around a custom-designed pool. Skip cookie-cutter designs and opt for features that elevate both aesthetics and experience.

Luxury pool upgrades to consider:

Geometric or modern pool designs
Tanning ledges with umbrella sleeves
Infinity edges or perimeter overflows
Glass tile or high-end plaster finishes
Built-in spas with spillovers
LED pool lighting for night ambiance

A well-designed pool doesn’t just cool you off—it becomes a visual centerpiece that defines the entire backyard.

3. Create Multiple Outdoor “Rooms.”

Luxury backyards function like an extension of your home. Instead of one large open area, divide your space into distinct outdoor rooms.

Examples include:

Pool lounge zone with chaises
Covered patio for dining
Outdoor kitchen and bar area
Fire pit seating space
Quiet retreat with daybeds or swings

Defined spaces make your backyard feel larger, more intentional, and far more luxurious.

4. Upgrade Your Outdoor Kitchen Beyond the Basics

A true luxury backyard deserves more than a basic grill. A fully equipped outdoor kitchen adds both convenience and serious wow factor.

Luxury outdoor kitchen features:

Built-in grills with searing stations
Pizza ovens or smokers
Quartz or natural stone countertops
Outdoor-rated refrigerators and ice makers
Bar seating with custom lighting
Weatherproof cabinetry

In Houston’s climate, covered outdoor kitchens allow year-round use while increasing your home’s value.

5. Prioritize Shade and Comfort

Luxury isn’t just about looks—it’s about comfort. In Texas heat, shade is non-negotiable.

High-end shade solutions include:

Extended covered patios
Custom pergolas with stained wood or metal
Motorized retractable shades
Louvered patio covers
Integrated ceiling fans and heaters

The right shade structure ensures your backyard is enjoyable no matter the season.

6. Elevate the Space With High-End Materials

Luxury backyards stand out because of their materials and finishes. Quality is visible—and it lasts.

Consider upgrading to:

Natural stone decking or porcelain pavers
Premium travertine or limestone
Custom concrete finishes
Stainless steel and masonry features
Glass tile, marble, or metallic accents

These materials not only elevate appearance but also perform better in Houston’s heat and humidity.

7. Elevate Comfort With Poolside Amenities

Think beyond the water:

Plush lounge chairs and outdoor sofas
A shaded cabana or daybed
An outdoor sound system
Beverage stations or a poolside bar

These details turn your pool area into a private resort.

Custom backyard build. Landscaping around custom pool. Custom turf grass area. Built in Houston Texas.

8. Add Fire and Water Features for Drama

Nothing says luxury like the contrast of fire and water. These features instantly elevate the atmosphere of your backyard.

Popular luxury additions:

Linear fire pits
Fire bowls or water bowls
Sheer descents or scuppers
Bubblers on tanning ledges
Custom water walls

These elements add movement, sound, and visual interest that make your space feel truly custom.

9. Design for Privacy Without Sacrificing Style

Luxury backyards feel like private retreats. Privacy can be achieved beautifully without feeling closed off.

Stylish privacy solutions include:

Decorative privacy walls
Vertical wood or metal screens
Lush landscaping and hedges
Custom fencing with architectural detail

The goal is to create seclusion while maintaining openness and elegance.

10. Blend Landscaping With Architecture

Landscaping is the finishing touch that ties everything together. Luxury landscapes are intentional, layered, and low-maintenance.

Luxury landscaping tips:

Use a mix of textures and heights
Frame focal points like pools or fire features
Incorporate accent trees and planters
Choose plants suited for Houston’s climate
Integrate landscape lighting for depth

A well-designed landscape enhances both your backyard and your home’s architecture

A 3D Video Package is the Smartest Step for Your Dream Backyard

companyteam Houston Home Owners, Pool backyard pool designs, Custom Pool, Houston backyard remodel, luxury pool, luxury pool houston, Outdoor living Houston TX, pools houston

Why Investing in a 3D Rendering Package is the Smartest First Step for Your Dream Backyard

Close your eyes and picture your dream backyard. Maybe you see a sparkling pool, a cozy outdoor kitchen, a shaded patio where you sip coffee in the mornings, or even a fire pit where your family gathers on chilly evenings.

The problem? It can be hard to imagine how all those elements come together in your actual space. Will that pool fit the way you want? Will your patio feel open or cramped? Will the outdoor kitchen block the flow to the yard—or make entertaining easier than ever?

That’s where a 3D rendering package comes in. At Your Great Outdoors, we use cutting-edge design software to take your ideas off the paper and bring them to life on the screen. Before you spend a single dollar on construction, you’ll be able to see exactly how your future backyard looks—and feels.

And trust us: once you’ve seen your backyard design in 3D, you’ll wonder how people ever planned without it.

By Your Great Outdoors – Houston’s Custom Outdoor Living Experts

When you picture a luxury pool, what comes to mind? Sparkling blue water, elegant design, comfortable lounging areas, and every detail perfectly placed. At Your Great Outdoors, we believe your pool should be more than a place to swim — it should be the centerpiece of your backyard, a personal retreat, and a lasting investment in your home.

Whether you’re building from scratch or upgrading your existing space, these 10 luxury pool tips will help you create a show-stopping outdoor experience that’s as functional as it is beautiful.

What Exactly Is a 3D Rendering Package?

A 3D rendering package is a digital design service that turns your wish list into a realistic, computer-generated model of your outdoor living project.

Instead of looking at flat blueprints or generic sketches, you’ll get:

A lifelike, virtual model of your future backyard
Multiple perspectives (from the patio, poolside, or even an aerial view)
Accurate scale and sizing so you know how every feature fits
Material and finish previews to compare looks (stone, tile, decking, etc.)

In short—it’s the difference between imagining your dream space and actually seeing it before it’s built.

3D design package of modern and custom pool

1. Confidence in Your Decisions

Outdoor living projects in Houston and Katy are big investments. A pool, patio, and outdoor kitchen can easily become one of the largest upgrades you’ll ever make to your home.

Without a 3D rendering, you’re relying on your imagination—and maybe a Pinterest board—to make decisions about layout, materials, and finishes. That can feel overwhelming.

With a rendering package, you’ll have crystal-clear visuals. You’ll know exactly what your kitchen island will look like in stone versus stucco, how the pool shape flows with the patio, or whether that pergola creates just the right amount of shade.

That confidence not only makes decision-making easier but also prevents second-guessing later.

2. Spot Issues Before They Happen

Here’s a truth we’ve learned after building countless custom outdoor spaces across Katy, Fulshear, and West Houston: what looks great on paper doesn’t always work in real life.

Maybe the fire pit feels too close to the pool. Maybe the dining table you imagined won’t fit comfortably under the patio cover. Maybe the layout blocks a view you love.

A 3D rendering allows you to “test drive” your space virtually, so you can catch those issues early. Adjustments in the design stage are simple and stress-free. Adjustments after construction? That’s when things get expensive.

Check out more of our 3D Videos

3. Save Time and Money

Think of a 3D rendering as insurance for your investment. By finalizing the design upfront, you’ll avoid costly mid-project changes and delays.

No surprises when the project is complete.
No wasted money on materials you end up not liking.
A smoother build process since the entire plan is clear from the start.

Yes, a rendering package is an additional upfront cost—but it often saves homeowners thousands of dollars in “I wish we had done it differently” regrets.

4. Easier to Share Your Vision

Maybe you and your spouse have different priorities: you want the outdoor kitchen, while he’s focused on the pool. Or maybe you’re working with a homeowners association (HOA) that requires detailed plans before approval.

A 3D rendering gives everyone the same picture—literally. Instead of trying to explain your vision, you can show it. That makes conversations with family members, HOAs, and even neighbors so much easier.

5. Total Creative Freedom

One of the biggest joys of a rendering is the ability to “try on” different looks. Want to see how natural stone compares to modern pavers? Curious whether a rectangle pool or a freeform pool feels better in your space?

With a 3D package, you can explore multiple options before committing. It’s like test-driving your backyard design until it feels just right.

6. Peace of Mind Through the Whole Journey

Remodeling and construction can be stressful. But when you know exactly what you’re building, the process feels exciting instead of nerve-wracking.

Homeowners tell us all the time that seeing their 3D renderings made the entire journey feel smoother:

They could picture the end result, not just the mess of construction.
They had confidence when choosing finishes, colors, and layouts.
They felt calmer writing the checks, knowing their dream space was already “real” on screen.

Real-Life Example: A Katy Family’s Backyard

One of our recent clients in Katy came to us with a wish list: a pool with a tanning ledge, a covered patio, and an outdoor kitchen for entertaining. On paper, it looked fine—but in the 3D rendering, they realized the kitchen layout blocked the best view of the pool.

By making a simple shift in the design phase, we gave them a layout that worked beautifully. When the project was complete, they told us:

“The 3D rendering was the best decision we made. We caught things we never would have thought about, and now our backyard feels perfect.”

Why Houston & Katy Homeowners Love It

In our area, where outdoor living is a true extension of the home, the stakes are high. You’re not just building a patio or pool—you’re creating the space where your family will spend summers, celebrate milestones, and unwind after long days.

That’s why Houston and Katy homeowners love starting with a rendering package. It brings clarity, creativity, and peace of mind to one of the biggest home investments they’ll ever make.

We offer full-service design and construction for:

Custom inground pools
Outdoor kitchens
Covered patios and pergolas
Fire pits and fireplaces
Turf installation, lighting, and more

Final Thoughts: Your Dream Backyard, Made Clear

At Your Great Outdoors, we believe every dream backyard starts with a clear vision. A 3D rendering package lets you see your future space, refine it until it’s perfect, and then build with total confidence.

If you’re ready to stop guessing and start seeing, investing in a rendering package is the smartest first step you can take.

Because once you’ve seen your backyard come to life in 3D, you won’t just dream about your new outdoor space—you’ll know exactly what’s waiting for you.

10 Luxury Pool Tips to Elevate Your Backyard Oasis

companyteam Houston Home Owners, Pool backyard pool designs, Custom Pool, Houston backyard remodel, luxury pool, luxury pool houston, Outdoor living Houston TX, pools houston

10 Luxury Pools Tips You NEED!

By Your Great Outdoors – Houston’s Custom Outdoor Living Experts

1. Start With a Custom Design That Reflects Your Lifestyle

Luxury is never one-size-fits-all. The most stunning pools are designed specifically for how you plan to use them.

Love to entertain? Opt for spacious tanning ledges, integrated seating, and a swim-up bar.
Looking for relaxation? Consider a serene infinity edge and a connected spa.
Want year-round enjoyment? Incorporate heating and ambient lighting for evening dips.

A professional custom pool builder in Katy, TX can work with you to design a layout, shape, and features that fit your personality and property.

2. Choose High-End Materials for a Timeless Look

The finish and materials you select will set the tone for your pool’s style and longevity. Luxury pools often feature:

Glass or mosaic tile for shimmer and texture
Travertine or natural stone decking for elegance and durability
Pebble finishes for a high-end, resort-like feel

Premium materials not only look beautiful but also stand up better to Houston’s weather and heavy use.

3. Add a Tanning Ledge for Resort-Style Lounging

A tanning ledge (also known as a Baja shelf) gives you a shallow space to relax, sunbathe, or watch the kids play.
Add stylish in-water loungers, umbrellas, and bubblers for that vacation-at-home feeling.

4. Incorporate Water Features for Sound and Movement

Waterfalls, sheer descents, and scuppers don’t just look amazing — they create a soothing soundtrack for your backyard.
For a truly luxurious effect, combine multiple water features for visual drama and ambiance.

5. Layer Your Lighting for Day-to-Night Glamour

Lighting transforms your pool from day use to an evening showpiece. Consider:

LED color-changing lights for customizable moods
Underwater lighting for sparkle and safety
Landscape lighting to highlight surrounding plants and architecture

Smart lighting systems let you control it all from your phone.

6. Create a Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Flow

Luxury living means blurring the lines between your indoor and outdoor spaces. Large sliding doors, covered patios, and outdoor kitchens right next to your pool make entertaining effortless.
A covered pavilion or pergola provides shade and style, while keeping guests connected to the pool area.

7. Elevate Comfort With Poolside Amenities

Think beyond the water:

Plush lounge chairs and outdoor sofas
A shaded cabana or daybed
An outdoor sound system
Beverage stations or a poolside bar

These details turn your pool area into a private resort.

8. Go Big With an Infinity or Perimeter-Overflow Design

For the ultimate in visual luxury, consider an infinity edge pool that blends into the horizon or a perimeter-overflow style where water flows evenly over every side. Both options create a mirror-like surface and an upscale, modern aesthetic.

9. Don’t Forget a Spa or Hot Tub

Nothing says luxury like a spillover spa integrated into your pool design.
Perfect for relaxing muscles, entertaining guests, or enjoying a warm soak in cooler weather.

10. Work With a Professional Luxury Pool Builder

The best way to ensure your pool is beautiful, functional, and built to last is to partner with an experienced luxury pool builder in Katy, TX. A professional will:

Recommend the best materials for your style and climate
Manage permits and construction timelines
Design features that maximize your space
Ensure the highest quality craftsmanship

Final Thoughts

The Best Time to Build in Your Backyard

companyteam Houston Home Owners, Outdoor Kitchen Covered Patio, Custom Pool, Houston backyard remodel, Outdoor Kitchen, outdoor kitchen in houston, outdoor kitchens, outdoor living, Outdoor living Houston TX, patio, Patio extension, pergola

When Is the Best Time to Build in Houston?

By Your Great Outdoors – Houston’s Custom Outdoor Living Experts

A Seasonal Guide to Building Patios, Pergolas, Outdoor Kitchens, Pools, and Fire Pits

When you’re ready to invest in your dream backyard in Houston, timing can make all the difference. From dealing with extreme heat and humidity to working around busy schedules and material availability, knowing the best time to build in Houston is crucial—especially for large outdoor living upgrades like extended patios, pergolas, custom outdoor kitchens, pools, and fire features.

In this blog, we’ll walk you through each major outdoor living project, explain the best time of year to start, and give you pro tips from the team at Your Great Outdoors, Houston’s trusted outdoor builder.

1. Extended Covered Patios: Best Time to Build — Late Winter to Early Spring

Houston summers are brutally hot, and no one wants to sit outside without shade or protection. That’s why covered patios are one of the first upgrades people want for their backyard. But here’s the trick: you don’t want to build them in the heat—you want them ready before the heat hits.

Why Late Winter to Early Spring Is Best:

Ideal weather: The milder temperatures of late January through April make it easier to work outside, pour concrete, and install structural components without weather-related delays.
Beat the summer rush: If you wait until May or June to start planning, many builders will already be booked solid.
Materials are more available: Suppliers are better stocked in Q1 of the year, helping you avoid material delays or price hikes.

Bonus Tip:

Planning your patio project early gives you time to customize. Add built-in fans, lighting, heaters, and TV mounts while the structure is being designed—not as an afterthought.

Windermere Custom Outdoor Seating and Patio

2. Pergolas: Best Time to Build — Spring or Fall

Pergolas are stylish, open-air structures that provide shade, visual interest, and can be upgraded with retractable canopies, climbing plants, or even rain-resistant features.

Why Spring and Fall Shine:

Optimal temperature: You avoid both summer heat and winter rain while still enjoying a comfortable outdoor work schedule.
Perfect transition project: Pergolas are a great middle-ground between a full roofed structure and an open patio. Many homeowners use this as a phase one project, prepping the area for future upgrades like kitchens or lighting.
Springtime bloom: If you want to plant vines or climbing flowers, building in spring lets those grow into the pergola canopy naturally through the summer.

Bonus Tip:

Consider combining a pergola build with new landscaping or lighting to make the most of seasonal weather and contractor availability.

3. Outdoor Kitchens: Best Time to Build — Winter or Early Spring

Outdoor kitchens are a major upgrade that turn your patio into a full entertainment hub. They require plumbing, gas lines, electrical work, and custom cabinetry or stonework—so they take time.

Why Winter Works Best:

Off-season building = faster timelines: Fewer homeowners are doing construction in the colder months, so your project might move more quickly.
Be ready for grilling season: Finish by late March, and you’re set for summer barbecues, crawfish boils, and holiday entertaining.
Avoiding summer material delays: Countertops, stainless appliances, and even masonry materials can be harder to get in peak summer demand.

Bonus Tip:

Ask about built-in features like wine fridges, smokers, pizza ovens, or teppanyaki grills (Le Griddle is a big favorite in Houston!) and plan your kitchen’s utility lines accordingly.

Check out more Outdoor Kitchens

4. Pools: Best Time to Build — Fall or Early Winter

Everyone wants a pool by summer—but very few people start early enough to make that happen.

Why Fall Is the Smartest Choice:

Longer build windows: Pool builds can take 10–16+ weeks, depending on design and weather. Starting in October or November ensures your pool is ready for that first warm front in spring.
Avoid peak-season premiums: Demand (and pricing) for pool construction peaks from April through July. You’ll often save money by building when crews are less booked.
Permitting goes faster: City permits can be a pain in high season. Starting in fall can help avoid long wait times in municipal offices.
Landscaping bonus: Finish your pool before spring, and you’ll have time to install lush landscaping that’s fully grown by summer.

Bonus Tip:

Consider solar pool heating or automated covers in the planning phase if you’re building in cooler months—these let you extend pool use well into fall.

5. Fire Pits & Fire Features: Best Time to Build — Late Summer to Fall

Unlike pools, fire features are most enjoyable in the cooler months. That’s why late summer through fall is the perfect time to add a fire pit, fire table, or fireplace to your backyard.

Why Fall Fires Make Sense:

Instant use: Start building in August or September, and you’ll be roasting marshmallows by Halloween.
Design flexibility: Whether you’re going with gas or wood-burning, fire features can often be added to existing patios or outdoor kitchens without a major overhaul.
Seasonal entertaining: Cozy up for outdoor Thanksgiving dinners or New Year’s Eve parties by the fire—without scrambling to install it last minute.

Bonus Tip:

Choose fire pits with built-in seating, or pair them with low-walled benches or natural stone surrounds. Don’t forget LED lighting for evening ambiance.

The #1 Things to Take Into Consideration when dealing with Houston Construction: Weather Factors!!!

Houston’s subtropical climate has its pros and cons for outdoor building. Here are a few seasonal considerations for all builds:

Hurricane season (June–November): Always factor in weather delays and backup plans when building in this window.
Heavy rainfall (May & October): Can slow projects that require excavation or concrete pours. Try to avoid major groundwork in these months.
Extreme heat (July–August): Difficult for both crews and materials. Avoid starting major builds during peak heat.
Freezes (rare, but possible in Dec/Jan): If plumbing is involved (like for outdoor kitchens or pools), builders will take precautions.

Your Project Timeline: When to Start Planning

Here’s a quick guide for when to start planning to make sure you hit your ideal completion date:

Project Type	Ideal Build Time	Start Planning In…
Covered Patio	Jan–Apr	Oct–Dec (previous year)
Pergola	Mar–May or Sep–Nov	Jan or July
Outdoor Kitchen	Dec–Mar	Sep–Nov
Pool	Oct–Feb	July–Sep
Fire Pit/Fireplace	Aug–Oct	May–July

Final Thoughts: Build Smart with Your Great Outdoors

Tips On Picking Pool Tile

companyteam Backyard Tips, Pool, Trend Custom Pool, outdoor living, Pool, Pool Design, Pool FAQ

How to Pick the Right Pool Tile for Your Pool

A Design Guide from Your Great Outdoors in Katy, TX

Choosing the right tile for your custom pool is more than just picking a color or pattern—it’s about selecting the materials and design details that reflect your personal style while withstanding the Texas sun, pool chemicals, and outdoor elements.

At Your Great Outdoors, we’ve been building luxury outdoor living spaces and custom pools in Katy and Greater Houston since 2008. Here’s our expert guide to help you choose the perfect pool tile for your backyard oasis.

Why Pool Tile Matters

Pool tile isn’t just decorative—it’s functional, too. It:

Protects the pool’s waterline and edges from wear
Adds style, color, and texture to your pool design
Makes cleaning easier by resisting algae and build-up
Increases the longevity and value of your pool

In a place like Houston, where pools are used almost year-round (except when it’s raining), choosing the right tile plays a big role in both beauty and durability.

drone shot of a modern clean lined pool in cypress texas.

Types of Pool Tiles (And What They’re Best For) Here’s a breakdown of the most popular tile materials and where they shine:

Glass Tile

Look: Sleek, modern, reflective; comes in mosaics or large pieces
Best For: Waterline, sun shelves, accent walls, spillovers
Pros: Fade-resistant, easy to clean, offers high-end luxury appeal
Things to Consider: Pricier than other options; installation requires a skilled tile expert

Pro Tip: Glass tile is a favorite for creating visual movement with light reflection, especially when paired with LED lighting or waterfalls.

Porcelain or Ceramic Tile

Look: Classic and versatile; available in tons of styles and finishes
Best For: Waterlines, spa areas, and full pool tiling
Pros: Budget-friendly, durable, and easy to customize
Things to Consider: Can chip under heavy impact; choose pool-rated options for outdoor use

Porcelain tile is a great choice for homeowners looking for durability with a lower price point, while still having room to play with patterns and finishes.

Natural Stone Tile (Slate, Travertine, Granite)

Look: Earthy, timeless, and elegant; adds a luxury, natural feel
Best For: Pool coping, water features, raised walls
Pros: Blends beautifully with landscaping and other outdoor elements
Things to Consider: Requires sealing; may get hot underfoot or slippery when wet

Stone tile pairs beautifully with the Texas landscape and creates a seamless indoor-outdoor transition for your backyard design.

Mosaic Tile

Look: Eye-catching, detailed, colorful patterns and imagery
Best For: Waterline borders, pool murals, spas, and custom features
Pros: Unique, customizable, adds a bold statement
Things to Consider: Higher labor costs for intricate installs; not always ideal for high-traffic surfaces

Mosaic tile is great for making your pool uniquely yours. From ocean-themed murals to geometric borders, it allows endless creativity.

Tile-Look Finishes (Alternative Surfaces) Some modern pools now use specialty surfaces like quartz, pebble, or exposed aggregate finishes that mimic the look of tile while offering a smoother feel underfoot.

Pros: Sleek appearance, integrated into pool interior
Things to Consider: Less customizable in patterns and may not work for waterlines or decorative borders

How to Choose the Right Pool Tile for Your Backyard

Consider Your Style Are you going for a sleek, modern look or something more natural and rustic? Your tile selection sets the tone. Glass or porcelain fits a clean, contemporary pool design. Travertine or natural stone tiles lean more traditional or Mediterranean.
Match Your Surroundings Look at your patio materials, home exterior, and landscaping. We recommend choosing pool tile that complements existing textures and tones in your outdoor living area.

At Your Great Outdoors, our team brings sample tiles to your home and creates custom design boards so you can see exactly how everything will blend.

Think About Function

Waterline tiles: Choose materials that resist staining and calcium build-up
Sun shelves and steps: Go for non-slip finishes and cooler-toned surfaces
Raised features or spas: Use decorative tile for a bold focal point

Bonus Tip: In hot Katy summers, lighter-colored tile stays cooler underfoot compared to dark tile.

Keep Maintenance in Mind Glass and porcelain are low-maintenance options, while natural stone may require more upkeep, including sealing and occasional cleaning to prevent mildew or discoloration.

For a busy family pool, we often recommend a durable, easy-to-clean tile paired with darker grout to hide wear.

Look at Samples in Natural Light Colors can look very different in sunlight versus under water. Always review tile samples:

Dry and wet
In full sun and shade
Next to your pool plaster or interior finish

This ensures the final look matches your vision, day and night.

Budgeting for Pool Tile It’s important to understand how tile fits into your overall pool budget. Tile prices range widely:

Basic ceramic tiles: $5 to $15 per square foot
Mid-range porcelain or glass: $15 to $30 per square foot
Premium natural stone or custom mosaic: $30+ per square foot

Installation adds to the total cost, especially for detailed mosaic designs or difficult angles. We always provide transparent pricing, so you know exactly what to expect.

Our Favorite Pool Tile Combos for Texas Backyards Need some inspiration? Here are a few tile combinations that work beautifully in Katy-area backyards:

Natural Slate on Raised Spa Wall + Smooth Glass on Baja Shelf Perfect blend of rustic and refined for a resort-inspired retreat.

How to Decide if You Need a Tanning Ledge

Tanning Ledges, also known as Sun Shelves

Custom Designs Built for Texas Living by Your Great Outdoors

Looking to build a custom pool in Houston or transform your entire backyard? Whether you’re dreaming of a modern, clean-lined pool or a luxurious outdoor living space, Your Great Outdoors designs and builds custom environments tailored to your space, your style, and our Texas climate. And one of the most asked-about features lately? Tanning ledges, also known as sun shelves or Baja shelves.

Let’s explore what a tanning ledge is, why it’s so popular with Houston-area homeowners, and how to know if it’s the right addition for your pool project.

What is a Tanning Ledge?

When designing your dream backyard oasis, every detail counts — from the pool shape to water features and beyond.

One increasingly popular addition among Houston-area homeowners is the tanning ledge, also known as a Baja shelf, sun shelf, or shallow lounging area. But is it the right feature for your pool?

Here’s how to decide if a tanning ledge fits your lifestyle, needs, and backyard vision.

Who Benefits the Most from a Tanning Ledge

1. Families with Young Children

If you have toddlers or small children, a tanning ledge offers a shallow area where they can splash and play under supervision. It creates a safe, contained environment that introduces little ones to water confidently—without diving into the deep end

2. Sun Seekers and Loungers

Want the ultimate spot for soaking up the sun while staying cool? Tanning ledges are made for in-water lounging. Add a couple of in-pool chaise lounges and enjoy that resort-style experience right in your own Houston backyard.

3. Pet Owners

Many Houston pet owners love having a shallow ledge where dogs can safely splash, cool off, or exit the pool with ease. Many of our clients in Texas consider it a must-have feature for their water-loving furry family members.

4. Entertainers and Hosts

Tanning ledges are a crowd-pleaser. They offer a place for guests to sit, socialize, and cool off without committing to a full swim. Add some bubblers or a shade umbrella, and you’ve got a backyard party hotspot.

Things to Consider Before adding a Tanning Ledge

Pool Size & Shape

In smaller pools, a tanning ledge can take up valuable swim space. Consider how often you’ll use it versus the total swimming area available.

Design Aesthetic

Tanning ledges create a luxurious, resort-like look — but they need to blend with your pool’s overall design. Our Regal Pools design team can help you visualize how it will look with 3D renderings before construction begins.

Budget

Adding a tanning ledge will slightly increase your project cost, especially if you include features like bubblers, umbrella sleeves, or in-pool loungers. But for many homeowners, the added comfort and style are well worth it.

Sun Exposure

Given Houston’s hot summers, you’ll want to think about sun and shade. South-facing tanning ledges are perfect for sunbathing, but you may want to add a pergola or umbrella for some reprieve from the Texas heat.

What is important to my Family

Think about how your family uses the pool. Do your kids love to play in shallow water? Do you have elderly family members who would enjoy sitting comfortably in the pool without swimming? Do you like relaxing in the water with a book or a drink? A tanning ledge can serve a wide range of age groups and activity levels, making it a family-friendly addition. But if your household is more about lap swimming or active water sports, you may want to balance the ledge size with your swim space needs.

Pool Type & Tanning Ledge Compatibility

Not all pools are built the same—and tanning ledges may work better in certain materials than others:

Gunite (Concrete): Fully customizable and incredibly durable. Great for homeowners who want a bespoke ledge with any shape or size.
Fiberglass: Many fiberglass pools come with built-in tanning ledges as part of their mold. They’re smooth, non-slip, and typically quicker to install.
Vinyl: Tanning ledges are trickier here and often require careful reinforcement due to liner concerns. They’re still doable, but not as common.

Custom Features to Elevate Your Tanning Ledge & Tanning Ledge Compatibility

Want to level up your pool’s wow factor? Here are some extras we recommend:

Bubblers or fountains: Create a soothing sound and cooling effect.
LED lights: Light up the ledge area at night for ambiance.
Umbrella sleeves: Add a stylish sun umbrella directly into the ledge.
Non-slip finishes: Especially important if pets or kids will be using the area.

Choosing the Right Depth & Dimensions

Tanning ledges are usually built 6 to 12 inches deep:

6–8 inches: Ideal for small children or just dipping your toes.
9–12 inches: Perfect for in-pool furniture and full-body lounging.

You’ll also want to think about how wide and long the ledge should be. A good rule of thumb? If you want to comfortably fit two lounge chairs and still have space to move, plan for at least 5 feet in width.

Text content

If you value comfort, style, and versatile use of your pool space, a tanning ledge can be a game-changer. It enhances your pool’s function, offers aesthetic appeal, and provides a shallow haven for kids, pets, or just unwinding after a long Houston day.

At Your Great Outdoors, we specialize in creating custom pools tailored to your lifestyle. Whether you want a sleek modern design or a family-friendly retreat, we can help you decide whether a tanning ledge is right for you — and design it to perfection!
